Zelda 2: Paracosm

I grew up playing and loving Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link even more than the original Zelda on NES.  Somehow, it resonated with me from a very young age.  It has such a dangerous sense of dreamlike adventure that kept me wanting to tiptoe further and further from the start; and the visuals, music, and enemy design all contribute to the experience.

I thought it would be cool to design a romhack that really leans into the aspects I've always loved.  So off-and-on over the past couple of years, I've been working on Zelda 2: Paracosm.  It features a new Overworld, new Palaces and Towns, and lots of custom graphics.  It's mostly finished, aside from a custom soundtrack being written and implemented by Xarnax42 from the Zelda 2 Discord community.  I will likely also implement a few other changes before "officially" releasing it.  Until then, I'd still like anyone interested to be able to play it.  I may even throw together some cartridge/box art or even a game manual if I'm feeling inspired!

Feisty Mario World Vs Super Mario World Playthrough

Feisty Mario World is a romhack I designed because I love Super Mario World, but I've played it so much that it's too easy.  My vision for this hack was to make every obstacle in the game faithfully echo the original, but with creative changes to challenge veterans.  There are a few balance changes, to include a larger difficulty curve (especially in secret levels) and occasional new obstacles.

This video was made to emphasize comparison and contrast.

Unfortunately, this Feisty Mario World footage is not showcasing the newest version.  I've since overhauled the map palettes (I'm far more pleased with it), and tweaked some obstacles and music.  ...But I really don't want to record a new FMW run at the moment.

The playthroughs are definitely not perfect by any means.  You may notice some editing on both sides to cut out a few deaths.

The video was recorded using GeForce Experience, and edited using Windows Movie Maker and VSDC Free Video Editor.

Thanks for watching!

Feisty Mario World

Feisty Mario World is a full 96-exit hardmode SMW romhack, now featuring less nauseating colors and custom sprites! The only big customization left is to try to add a few new levels. I'm busy this month, but once July rolls around, I'll work on it!
Here is a link:

(Includes the custom rom, a readme, and a copy of the box art)

Also, thank you to my friend Kenton for designing this box art! Once the game has everything I'd like, I plan on getting some hard copies made, with this image on the cartridge!

Homebrew Games Part 2: Splendor

Splendor is a simple strategy game about becoming as influential as possible in the gem industry.  On your turn, you may do one of 3 actions: take up to 3 gems (as long as there are some left in the bank!); buy a card on the table using gems (granting you Prestige Points and permanent gems); or reserve a card (you gain a wild "gold" gem token and you may use a future turn to purchase your reserved card).  If you meet the requirements to collect a Noble card, then you automatically take it and gain 3 Prestige Points at the end of your turn.  The first player to reach 15 Prestige Points wins the game.

The game starts off relatively slowly.  Players spend most of their turns collecting gems to buy basic cards with.  As you gain more cards, you also gain "permanent gems."  You may use the card's gem over and over to buy newer, more expensive/more valuable cards.  By the end of the game, most players are taking cards (and therefore usually aquiring Prestige Points) almost every turn.  Each turn becomes a critical decision in the race to 15 points.

While visiting some extended family, we wanted to play Splendor.  Most of us owned it, but we didn't have it on-hand.  We were going to stay for a while, so we decided to make our own.

First, I researched the cost/type/points of each of the game's 100 cards.  I then cut index cards down and marked cost/type/point values on all of them, to match the original game (I didn't want to change the mechanical balance).  After every card was prepared and playable, I recruited some friends and family to contribute to adding art to the 100 cards.  This process has taken almost a year, but now each card has its own unique drawing!

A few months after we started, we purchased a plastic gem set from www.topshelfgamer.com and made a "bank" with a half-dozen muffin tray from the dollar store.  We also added felt in the bottom of the tray wells to reduce the noise.

Some of the cards are part of a set (e.g. the 3 Powerpuff Girls cards).  Our house rules include +1 point for completing a set of 2 and +2 points for completing a set of 3.  We also play to 20 points, just for fun.

Everything is hand-drawn in marker/pencil by me, Kristen, Eric, Andrew, Trevor, and Chase.

Homebrew Games Part 1: Arcomage

Over the years, I've made a couple Homebrew board/card/paper games to play when friends and I haven't had access to the real thing for some reason or another.  I'll describe them and post pictures during these next few blog entries.

The first one is from an old computer game series called Might and Magic.  Released before the more popular Heroes of Might and Magic strategy series, you could build a party and explore towns and dungeons and perform quests for NPCs.  In the 7th and 8th entries in the series, you could visit any tavern and play a virtual card game called Arcomage.

The game is played with 2 players (you vs. the computer).  Players take turns playing cards from their 6-card hand, and taking new cards to always have 6 cards in-hand.  To play a card, you must spend the resources required (shown by color/number in the bottom-right corner).  There are 3 types of resources, and each type has a "generator" to allot you at the beginning of your turn.  Bricks are Red, and are generated by QuarriesGems are Blue, and are generated by MagicRecruits are Green, and are generated by Dungeons.

There are three ways to win the game.  The first way is to increase your Tower to a predetermined amount (such as 50).  The second way is to reduce the opponent's Tower to zero.  The third way is to gain a predetermined ridiculous amount of any resource (such as 300 gems).  Therefore, Towers are your most precious attribute.  You can also build up your Wall to soak up damage and protect your Tower.

It's surprisingly fun, and actually really easy to play once you get the hang of it.  There is some luck involved, but you can start to see patterns and accommodate your strategy accordingly.  For example, red cards tend to focus on building up your wall; blue cards your tower; and green cards focus on damaging the enemy.  The biggest complaint I had was that the only way you could play Arcomage was to play against a computer within a video game...

...So I made my own.

First, I printed out every card from Might and Magic VIII.  I also printed out duplicates for some "common" cards.  I also bought some cheap card protector sleeves to make them easier to handle.  After that, I had to figure out how to make an intuitive board for tracking all the numbers in the game (tower, wall, resources).  I ended up buying some magnetic dry-erase boards and markers (some permanent and some dry-erase).

With a ruler and permanent markers, I drew the Tower/Wall indicators on a 1-foot by 1-foot board.  With magnets, cardstock, and double-sided tape, I made the pieces.  Each player has a Resources board with slots to write in generators, and resources that can be adjusted each turn by sliding magnets to the appropriate ones- and tens-slots.

It has been a blast playing with other people, and everyone who has played has enjoyed it.  I even made a few custom cards to throw some personal flavor in:

I'd recommend Arcomage to anyone of any age or strategy skill level.  If you get the chance, find a way to play it!  Oh, and if you're into party-building fantasy adventure - Might and Magic VII & VIII are some of my favorite video games in existence - and I don't say that lightly.

"Red Hat Castle" Terraria Adventure Map

So I've been spending most of my free time during these past few weeks working on a custom adventure map for Re-Logic's Terraria.  It is a "Metroidvania"-style map, where you openly explore and are limited only by your abilities, of which you find many along the way.  It is a large castle with themed sections, surrounded by outdoor and underground sections as well.  It features 3 difficulty settings, chosen by the player at the start of the map.  The difficulty affects both platforming and the availability of items.

If you don't own it already, then you will need to purchase Terraria to play my map.  Then, you just need to download my single map file and place it into your Terraria\worlds folder.  Then, boot up your game like you normally would, make a fresh character, and my map should be there!

You can download my map here:   http://mods.curse.com/maps/terraria/red-hat-castle

You must make a new character, you must follow any directions on any signs, and it is recommended not to start on the hardest difficulty until you're familiar with the adventure!

If you have any questions, concerns, or recommendations, feel free to let me know!  Any feedback is greatly appreciated!  I will probably post pictures and/or a video playthrough soon.

Anyway, thanks again for checking out my work!

New Evil Eversion Custom Level

Lately, I have really wanted to design and upload game-related stuff... and while I've been waiting for better means of doing so, I went ahead and made one more Eversion level.  And it's evil.

In the offchance that someone is feeling particularly masochistic, here it is.

Eversion Challenge Levels Playthrough

And here is a full playthrough of my Eversion Challenge Level Set.  It definitely gets tough.

Eversion Challenge Level Set

Eversion is an awesome platformer by Guilherme S. Tows available for free on his website.  There is also a deluxe version you can buy for cheap on Steam!  You play as a little flower(?) guy, and you whimsically bounce off cheerful goomba-like enemies as you make your way to the exit.  Pay close attention to discover areas where the sky slightly changes color and other music can be heard, as those areas allow you to evert to a parallel world.

I have used Fastcall22's level editor to make a complete level set designed for people who have finished the original game and want a new challenge.  I put a lot of love into it!
Here is a preview:

To play it, first download the original game, here:
http://zarat.us/tra/eversion/

Pay attention to where you place your Eversion folder, as you will be replacing some files. Also, I'd strongly recommend playing through the original levels before starting mine.

Next, download my maps, here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/2bhn7hu75xe1o7m/maps.zip

Replace all the contents of the Eversion "maps" folder with the new extracted files.

After that, you need to download one more thing:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/66bahodp5p4c53w/scripts.zip

Replace the contents of the "scripts" folder.  These files are courtesy of Fastcall22's EversionMod, which allows advanced editing of the camera, doom walls, etc.  It's not necessary for simply playing the game, but if you are interested, the page for his Level Editor and EversionMod are here:
http://fastcall22.blogspot.com/2010/03/eversion-level-editor-released.html

That's it!  Run the Eversion application and begin playing the new level set.  Thanks for checking it out, and I hope you enjoy it!
